Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance). Italian generic of Glucobay (Bayer) by Bruno Farmaceutici, «medicinale equivalente»; 40 tablets of 50 mg.

🔬 Mechanism:

▪︎ Blocks the brush-border enzymes of the small intestine that cut starch and sucrose into glucose, so post-meal glucose rises more slowly and lower

▪︎ Acts in the gut lumen: less than 2 % of the dose is absorbed

▪︎ Does not cause hypoglycemia on its own

🕒 Dosing: with the first mouthful of a meal, starting at 50 mg and increasing gradually, up to 50–100 mg three times a day, exactly as prescribed by your physician

⚠️ Prescription drug (Rx): requires physician assessment, prescription and lab monitoring. Most common side effects are bloating, gas and diarrhea, usually fading with slow dose escalation. Contraindicated in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, malabsorption, severe renal impairment, cirrhosis, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hypoglycemia with insulin or sulfonylureas is treated with pure glucose only.
